Today, August 30, the first stage of the Tour of Almaty-2019 was held. The cyclists overcame a predominantly road track with a length of 118 kilometers. The start and finish lines were located on the territory of the sports complex "Almaty Arena".
The relatively short length of stage intended different questlines. The favorites of the general classification and the road specialists tried to break the peloton into several parts in order to isolate the sprinters. In turn, the sprint teams made every effort so that the audience could see how the winner of the stage is determined in the final spurt from the main group.
As a result, the first place was determined among the road specialists. After the finish, the first rider was Patryk Stosz from the Polish CCC Development Team. The organizers had to resort to a photo finish to determine the best rider. The second place is taken by Matvey Nikitin, who drives for the Vino - Astana Motors team. The third was David Gaburo from Neri Sottoli - Selle Italia - KTM. They finished with the time - 02:37:34. It's worth to remark that in the general classification, Nikitin and Gaburo switched places because of the intermediate bonification of the Italian rider.
" We had a plan to start together, and then I've got the command to spurt into the lead. The only thing that because of the wind, we were not able to get a head start. We have already formed a settled plan. I hope our team has a good chance to win. ", -said Gaburo.
According to the results of the first stage, Nikitin put on the best Kazakh rider jersey.
" All the strong cyclists tried to spurt into the lead to outpoint the opponent before tomorrow's mountain stage. Because the more you make an advantage on the first day, the easier it will be to win, especially in the general classification, the next day at Medeu. First of all, the riders who outpointed have all chances to gain the victory tomorrow. Someone wants to go to the mountain lead, who could win a separate stage. The general classification will be decided precisely between those who spurted into the lead. First of all, the Astana team riders and Alexander Vlasov will be one of the contenders ", - said Nikitin.
Tomorrow, August 31, the second stage of the race will be held. Participants will start at the Halyk Arena and will overcome 160 kilometers with a finish at Medeu. After that, the winner of the Tour of Almaty-2019 will be determined. Patryk Stosz will start in the leader's yellow jersey.
